Gaming history 90's -2000

A lot happened in the 90's from Sonic the hedgehogs debut in 91, the release of the SNES ( super nintendo entertainment system/ super famicom ) in 90 in Japan, 91 in US and 92 in Europe, the Sega dreamcast in 99 in and nintendo N64 in 96/97 were also released. Oh yeah and ID software made DOOM, how did I almost forget that.

DOOM by ID software in 93 was the first ever FPS game to exist it was originally only available for PC but later got a SNES and MegaDrive Port. The PC release was responsible for the Birth of the FPS genre that we know today, it featured impressive 3d visuals and fluent/responsive game-play for its era, being a game about Satanic Rituals and Demons it caused much controversy upon its release, despite this DOOM did remarkable well having an audience of around 10 million players. Its ability to be Played through Networking created a brand new subculture of gamers, now known as online gamers. In 2004 DOOM was voted the Greatest Gaming Achievement of all time by GameSpy and other Industry Professionals.

The SNES was a huge success destroying its rival console the mega-drive and selling 59.15 million units, the reason for this being the much wider range of games available for the SNES, from Mario World, Mario allstars, Super Metroid, Legend of Zelda: link to the past, Final fantasy, Crono Trigger, Final Fight, Street Fighter 2 and many more huge titles.

Not only were the games better the console itself was superior to the mega-drive in almost every way.

Sony joined the video game industry in 93 with the release of the PlayStation, the only reason this occurred was due to nintendo requesting Sony's help with the production of a new console... ( what then became the snes ). Nintendo broke off the contract with Sony mid development, so instead of dropping the project they continued on their own and designed the massively successful Playstation, for its time the Playstaion demonstrated very impressive 2D visuals as well many large scale full 3D games which other than starfox on SNES this was brand new to console gamers, and Starfox was 3D but it was horrendous to look at in comparison to say the original tomb raider or time splitters.

The N64's release in 96 Re-established Nintendo's position in the gaming industry, because the playstation did surprisingly well and sold a substantially more consoles than the SNES (selling approx 100million consoles which is around 60 million more consoles than the snes ). The N64 was a success but still struggled to keep up with the Play-stations success only selling 32.1 million consoles worldwide, meaning Both the SNES and N64 sales don't add up to the Play-stations sales.

The N64 had some huge game titles non the less, including the likes of Banjo Kazooie, Super Mario 64, Mario Party, Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask/Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Stadium, Perfect Dark and GoldenEye 007.

Released in 97 GoldenEye 007 was a huge step in gaming, developed by Rare it was full of revolutionary new concepts: rather than simply run and gun to the end of each stage to win, objectives were introduced such as planting C4, assassinating VIP characters, Timed objectives and Stealth segments. It was also the First FPS game to contain a zoom-able scope weapon. It took what the very successful DOOM had done in 93 and took it to a whole new level.

In 1990 in US an EU we saw the release of the Gameboy, Nintendo's hand held console, this is when Nintendo's understanding of the consumer market really shone through. Selling over 118 million units worldwide it is one of the largest achievements in gaming history in my opinion and revolutionised the industry   at the time.
the reason im not going to mention the Gameboy colour is that it technically wasnt a new console it was merely a shiny version of the Gameboy to keep the public quite while nintendo developed the the true successor the GBA or Gameboy Advance.

In 1998 we saw the release of Pokemon for Gameboy and we all know its never going to end as it's such an insanely popular franchise.

In 1999 the Sega Dreamcast was released and it was a huge flop, only being available for two years then being recalled due to low sales, despite this the system sported some impressive specifications and the first console to feature network play.
